world class

Take a golf trip to the Lowcountry, and experience scenic beauty and activities along the way.

More than 30 championship courses in the area are open to the public. Because of the sub-tropical climate, the lowcountry geography, and the plant life on Hilton Head, conditions are almost ideal for fabulous courses to be established here. Such names as Clyde Johnston, Arthur Hills, Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player have had a lot to work with to design these world class golf courses. All that was needed was their expertise and ingenuity to breathe a kind of life into the land that can be found nowhere else.

The most famous are the three courses where the Heritage is played on
Sea Pines Resort:
Two courses are in Palmetto Hall Plantation: The Arthur Hills Course and The Robert Cupp Course.

Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort boasts three world class golf courses by Arthur Hills, Robert Trent Jones and George Fazio

Hilton Head National has three nines: The National, The Player and The Weed

Shipyard Plantation has three nines: Clipper, Brigantine and Galleon

Designed by George Cobb in 1960, the Ocean Course at Sea Pines underwent a complete face lift and was brought up to date by Mark McCumber in 1995. He made a course that is both a challenge and very playable for all levels of golfers. It has been awarded a Beginner Friendly Course Certification. Low handicappers will have to be playing their best game because of lagoons and bunkers, especially if they are playing from the McCumber tees, which make the course 6906 yards. Besides the lagoons, water comes into play on 12 of the holes. There are many risk and reward holes where low scores can be made. (see more)

Old South opened In 1992 and was immediately selected by Golf Digest magazine in the top ten of new courses. Clyde Johnston earned his money designing this project because as he said,”…the variety of the setting from oak forest to open pasture to tidal salt marsh provided the opportunity to vary the design elements and strategy of play.” He even came across some archeological sites that had to be reported and cataloged.
