free nature walks

A horseback or walking tour of the Sea Pines Forest Preserve is an opportunity for unmatched enjoyment of the surroundings.

The first trails followed the ante-bellum rice dikes which were built by hand in the 1800s and the logging trails of the 1950s.

Riding instruction or Western style leisurely trail riding from Lawton Stables showcases the lush outdoor beauty where you may see alligators basking in the sun and wildflowers in bloom.

A boardwalk, observation decks and fishing docks are provided, and a trail is provided for driving to the lakes in the center of the preserve. Nature trails do not allow for bike use, and each is marked with the distance and approximate time required ranging from 25 minutes to two hours.

The area has been recognized by the National Audubon Society as an important birding area where more than 200 species have been spotted.

A shell ring built by Indians some 4000 years ago
is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The shell rings are believed to have been built around campsites from an oyster shell base..
